5 Trends That Will Drive ALSP Growth in 2020

David Galbenski, EVP of Strategic Initiatives at Lumen Legal (now Lexitas), recently authored an article for The American Lawyer that discusses five trends that we believe will drive growth for alternative legal services providers (“ALSPs”) in 2020. Our predictions about the increased, and increasingly varied, utilization of ALSPs in the coming year are rooted in industry research focused on the behaviors and buying patterns of in-house counsel, other consumers of legal services, and law firms—who, themselves, are tapping ALSPs to better serve clients.

The five trends, which are expounded upon in The American Lawyer article, include:

  1. The Rise of Legal Operations: As corporate law departments continue to place more emphasis on legal operations, more will rely upon ALSPs to help accelerate efficiency and effectiveness.
  2. Going After “High-Hanging Fruit”: ALSPs will assist corporate law departments with a broader range of functions.
  3. Turning Fixed Costs Into Variable Costs: As law firms continue to outsource more work to secondees and contract attorneys, ALSPs will facilitate the right matches between talented lawyers and corporate law departments.
  4. Technology is a Means to an End: While technology plays an important role in delivering effective alternative legal services, people and processes are still paramount.
  5. Increased Collaboration With Law Firms: Instead of increased competition, law firms are increasingly recognizing the value of partnering with ALSPs to provide better service and value to clients.

The utilization of ALSPs, across the spectrum of legal services, will continue to rise in the coming year. Learn more in David’s recent article in The American Lawyer5 Trends That Will Drive ALSP Growth in 2020.
