Chief Executive Officer Discusses the Importance of Responsible AI Use in the Legal Industry
Generative AI is quickly transforming the legal industry, with technology taking over many of the time-consuming manual tasks that used to bog down legal professionals’ working hours. While human beings still need to be careful to ensure that their tech is used ethically and responsibly, these new innovations make it possible for attorneys to do their jobs more effectively than ever when used well.
Lexitas Chief Executive Officer Nishat Mehta spoke with Nasdaq TradeTalks about the exciting new possibilities posed by generative AI. “We know that there is a fairly large set of underrepresentation in the legal field today, meaning we could use more lawyers. And so that's one area where generative AI can be quite helpful,” he said. “I think the other is in raising the floor of competence. It's able to make lawyers, at least at the base level, be stronger than they otherwise would be.”
Mehta also highlighted AI’s ability to extract meaningful information from large amounts of data. “Litigation requires the collection and then processing of millions of lines in documents, depositions, medical records, case law, etc,” he said. “And I think generative AI is very good at collapsing all of that information into the single best argument or set of arguments that you can make to win the case. Now at the end of the day, it doesn't act on its own. An attorney is obviously very much involved in this. But the beginnings are there.”
Mehta also discussed how AI can support ethical compliance. “You can incorporate all of the intricacies of the law into the system,” he said. “The nice thing about having a system encapsulate those rules is that you make sure that the output of the system supports all of the rules and that ultimately the attorney using that output knows how they're allowed to use the information that's given to them. If we implement the security correctly, we actually have the ability to elevate all of us. We all get better at following laws that we may not even have been aware of because they're built into the system.”
AI has the power to make legal services more accessible, efficient, and ethical. The key is in understanding how to use these tools as effectively as possible and implementing them in a larger strategy geared toward clients’ needs.
